How Can A Coach Help You

If you are like me you are thinking, “I don’t really need a coach, I know enough to get by, and I’m not really trying to win.” Well having been in your shoes, I’m here to explain to you just why a coach can be an invaluable asset no matter what your goals might be. We will talk today in terms of running, triathlon, and sports performance, but these theories hold true for many other aspects of life.

Your coach is your ally, they are the person in your corner who is there to look out for you, and let you bounce ideas off of them as you go through the process of working towards your goals.  They also help to hold you accountable and remove the load that is created by having to figure out what to do when.  

As someone who has coached many athletes for years, I must say I was guilty of being self-coached until last summer.  I felt like I knew what I was doing (and I better, other people are trusting me with their training), so there was no reason not to do it for myself.  Since starting to work with a coach of my own (big shout out to Cait at Crew Racing & Rehab) I quickly learned a few things, first, it is so nice to just do what is on the paper (or screen these days), and not have to worry about figuring out what to do when, and if you are hitting your target numbers. It is also really easy to make excuses when you are only answering to yourself, but when I know that Cait will look and see that I did or did not do what she wrote, I cannot possibly skip or alter a workout.  That accountability and structure are simply not possible without someone else working with you.  

One question that comes up when we talk to people about the benefits of working with a coach is the question, What If I’m Not Training For A Specific Event?  Well, that is simple, you can still benefit from a coach because you still have a goal, maybe it is to get fit, maybe it is to be ready if an event comes up, maybe it is to just have fun and enjoy training.  Either way, you can still benefit from working with a coach because it gives you that ally, and takes that load off of you while giving you the benefit of their knowledge and experience.  Sure there are tons of training plans online that you can buy, and even more that you can download for free, but what do you do if you don’t know why a workout didn’t go well, or how do you know if you are on track to hit your goal?  What happens if you miss a workout, who do you ask if you make it up, or change something later on?  These are all things a coach will naturally do for you.  They will make you a plan just for you, week by week, that is based on how the past training has gone and geared to help you reach your goals.
